Every sustainable step counts

In the past few months SAS has introduced several sustainability initiatives to help achieve its goal of reducing carbon emissions 25% by 2030.

Perhaps the biggest sustainability initiative that SAS is undertaking right now is the modernization of its fleet with the Airbus A320neo, the most fuel-efficient short-haul aircraft available on the market today. SAS has ordered 80 A320neos. So far, 25 have been put into service.  
“Our main priority is to reduce our emissions by changing to more fuel-efficient aircraft and to use Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF, or biofuel),” says Lars Andersen Resare, Head of Environment & CSR at SAS. “But we work on several sustainability areas, from larger long-term partnerships to more customer-related changes aboard the aircraft in the here-and-now.” 

A320neo: The most fuel-efficient short to medium range aircraft

The recently announced cooperation between SAS and Airbus to develop electric aircraft is an example of a larger long-term partnership. But while electric planes are being developed, SAS has plans to use more and more biofuel. It is thereby cooperating with energy suppliers, such as Preem, to accelerate the production of locally produced biofuel.

One of the sustainable initiatives that SAS has introduced recently that has immediate effect is the free automatic offset of carbon emissions for its youth passengers and EuroBonus members.  

And some of the more efficient procedures that SAS has already introduced include the dry washing of aircraft and the use of green flights to increase fuel efficiency.

The transformation of how food and beverages are served to SAS passengers is also providing various benefits to the environment. “We aim to be using 100% recyclable materials by 2030,” Andersen Resare says. “We’re moving towards realizing that target. We’re also looking at the seasonality, and increasing plant-based proteins in the menus, and the way the food and packaging have been produced, and how the food has been transported before it comes onboard an aircraft.”

Using local and seasonal ingredients in its menus, the New Nordic by SAS servings that come in cube-shaped packages to minimize packaging, support these goals. The reduction of weight onboard each aircraft, which means fuel reduction, is also being achieved through the reduction of food waste via the pre-order meal service, as well as by the elimination of onboard sales items.
“While some of these initiatives only result in small sustainability gains, every step towards more sustainable travel counts,” Andersen Resare adds. “And for SAS, sustainable development means continual improvement. That’s why we will continue working as hard as possible to achieve our sustainability goals and honor our sustainability obligations.”
